My 10X Reading Speed - 1K Books in 2024

I was about to cry as I was feeling very low. As I was a brave girl, I held them back. Eighteenth position! It sucks! I tumbled down fifteen positions. I once again looked at my report card to check whether it was 18th or just 8th. Alas! It was a double-digit number. My poor health, a marriage in the family, and the difficult Hindi matras which I could not decipher were some of the reasons for my poor performance in final exams of third grade. Will Ma heavily scold me for my failure? With a heavy heart and at a slow pace, the distance between the school and home seemed to never end.

As I walked home with my report card, I dreaded showing it to my mother. When I finally did, instead of scolding me for my poor grades and 18th position, she did something unexpected—she smiled gently and patted my back. With a calm yet firm tone, she said, “It’s not about competing with others, my child. It’s about competing with the person you were yesterday. Set your own benchmarks, and strive to surpass them.”

Her words struck a chord deep within me. At a time when I felt lost and defeated, she gave me the strength to focus on my own journey. “Comparison is the thief of joy,” Theodore Roosevelt once said, and my mother’s wisdom aligned perfectly with this truth. She taught me that the race is never with others but with ourselves. Instead of fixating on positions and ranks, she encouraged me to work on becoming a better version of myself, step by step.

This simple yet profound lesson became the cornerstone of my approach to life. Even years later, I owe my growth and achievements to her timeless advice, which continues to guide me through every challenge.

The Power of Reading for Personal Growth

Most life coaches emphasize the importance of consistent reading as a means of personal and intellectual growth. Experts like Jim Kwik, a renowned brain coach, suggest that reading at least two books per week—totaling around 100 books in a year—can significantly enhance cognitive abilities, emotional intelligence, and problem-solving skills. Research published in Neurology indicates that engaging in mentally stimulating activities like reading can slow cognitive decline by up to 32% in older adults. Additionally, a study by the University of Sussex found that just six minutes of reading can reduce stress levels by 68%, making it one of the most effective relaxation techniques.

With this goal in mind, my target of reading 1,000 books in 2024 is not about the numbers—it’s about building a calmer, sharper, and more focused mind. This year, I pushed my own limits, reading more than I ever have before. It was a personal challenge, inspired by my mother’s advice to compete only with myself, and I’m grateful to have crossed the boundaries I thought I couldn’t surpass. This journey reminds me that true progress comes when we focus on growing beyond our own limitations, one step at a time. Reading is indeed transformative, as our beloved Om Swami Ji beautifully articulated in His post, 5 Principles of Happiness. In His words:

“Except when in intense solitude or sadhana, I don’t recall a time when I went to bed without reading something. No matter how tiring my day might have been, I may just read only one page, but I make sure that I do it. Reading is like traveling the world without spending as much time or money.”

‘Readers are leaders.’ This timeless quote encapsulates the essence of personal growth through reading. Despite a demanding schedule that included 6-10 hours of daily sadhana, 1-2 hours of charity work, managing a full-time business, and taking care of my home, I made reading a priority. It wasn’t easy, but by weaving it into my daily routine, I turned it into a habit that fueled my growth.

This routine wasn’t a one-day miracle—it was a commitment I upheld every single day. Whether it was reading during brief moments of downtime or listening to audiobooks while multitasking, I consistently found ways to engage with books. It wasn’t just about speed or quantity but about the immense value each book added to my life.

If I could manage this with my packed schedule, so can you. The key is discipline and a clear focus on your goals. In the next section, I will share the practical steps I followed to make reading a part of my everyday life, which can help you unlock your potential and achieve what seems impossible.

Practical Steps to Increase Your Reading Speed

1. I finished at least one book per day and formed a chain.

I made it a habit to finish at least one book every day. Instead of just starting books, I ensured that I completed one each day. This practice had a profound impact on my consciousness, strengthening my willpower and boosting my inner resolve. Each finished book felt like a commitment fulfilled, motivating me to continue my reading journey with even more determination.

2. I refrained from watching TV and movies.

I consciously avoided feeding my mind with inappropriate or unnecessary content, as it can negatively impact mental health. Studies have shown that consuming negative or irrelevant media increases anxiety, reduces focus, and clouds our thoughts. Instead, I invested this time in nourishing my mind through books.

3. I was negligibly active on social media and reduced gossiping or discussing politics.

I limited unnecessary conversations because they can disrupt moments of silence and inner peace. I realized that when we engage in idle talk, those conversations often replay in our minds later, stealing the focus we need during reading or other meaningful activities.

4. I utilized even two free minutes for reading or listening to books.

I once heard a doctor say that he managed to read during the small gaps between seeing patients—when one left the chamber, and another was yet to enter. Inspired by this, I started using even such brief moments in my day for reading or listening to books. This simple habit allowed me to make the most of every spare moment.

5. I set deadlines to increase my speed.

Deadlines are powerful motivators. Whether it was returning books to the library or completing books on Audible within a set timeframe, having targets pushed me to read/ listen faster and more efficiently. Setting specific dates to finish tasks can greatly enhance focus and productivity. The pressure of my year-end deadline pushed me to intensify my efforts. I listened to books for over 230 hours and read books for more than 100 hours in December alone, proving how deadlines can bring out the best in us.

6. I listened to some books at 1.2x or 1.5x speed.

Listening to audiobooks at slightly increased speeds allowed me to absorb more content without compromising comprehension. This technique saved time and enabled me to cover more material daily.

7. I explored books on diverse subjects.

To ensure growth and avoid monotony, I read books across a wide range of topics, including self-help, business, finance management, spirituality, stories, novels, commentaries, mythology, history and Vedanta. This diversity broadened my perspective, enriched my understanding, and kept my reading experience exciting.

8. I generously donated books to those in need.

I firmly believe that what we give comes back to us manifold. I donated books about Sanatan Dharma to security guards, housekeeping staff, shopkeepers, pressmen, priests, children, senior citizens, and others who couldn’t easily access books. Sharing knowledge is a gift, and seeing it benefit others added immense joy to my reading journey.

By incorporating these steps into your daily life, you too can unlock your potential and achieve your goals. Remember, it’s not about competing with others; it’s about becoming the best version of yourself, one page at a time, one paragraph at a time, one word at a time.
